“Find Healing in Mexico”

From June 1st to July 13th, Erin was able to become the first intern at the Mexico Outreach Center in Parras, Mexico. Starting in fourth grade, Erin began trips to Parras. This began a deep connection and love for the people there, and after sixth grade she went back every summer. At the beginning of this year she began to feel called to stay longer than a week’s time in Parras. She had a week trip already planned during the first week of July with her family, but that wasn’t enough anymore for Erin. She felt compelled to go longer, and decided to pursue after the desire God had given her. She talked with the head missionary that began the Outreach Center and told him that she wanted to come aboard their team for a longer period of time. He agreed and set her up on a six-week internship for the summer. Only a senior in high school, her parents could’ve been hesitant to let Erin journey through that alone. Fortunately, Erin’s parents were given peace from God and gave her over to God’s calling and she left.

During her six weeks in Mexico, she helped with a Vacation Bible School, weekly youth group gathering, and with the needs of families in the villages. Mexico, for Erin, was the place she sought solitude and found God in the midst of it. Being very limited of contact with the world back home, she found what she needed more than home could give: rest in Christ.

She is beginning college with the intention and vision from God to become a pediatric surgeon (cough, cough 15 years in school). To most high school graduates this looks like a huge mountain unattainable and undesirable to take on, but for Erin it is something she has literally been preparing for her entire school career. She is not blindly walking into such heights, but like a climber prepares to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, Erin has equipped herself in education and by the empowerment of God. Unlike many who have just finished their consecutive 12 years in school, she boldly makes this statement, “I simply like to learn.” Therefore, she goes ready for the years to come, so that she may take her God-given love for education and achieved skills back to Mexico. Her desire is to provide a health clinic to Parras, and offer free health care for the people there.

“But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without pay; give without pay.” (Matthew 10:7-8 ESV)
